Scotland Bonfire Night Forecast as Storm Ciaran Blows Over After Wind and Rain

Thousands of Scots will be heading out to enjoy firework displays this weekend as Bonfire Night arrives just days after Storm Ciaran brought heavy rain and wind.

While the worst of Storm Ciaran is expected to blow over, Met Office forecasters say unsettled conditions will remain over Guy Fawkes weekend.

It comes after days of disruptions after heavy rain battered parts of Scotland causing flooding and travel chaos, including train cancellations and road closures – such as the A92. The weather chaos is impacting Bonfire Night plans too, with a fireworks event set to take place at Edinburgh’s Hopetoun House this Saturday cancelled due to the heavy rainfall.

Six flood alerts remain in place as the storm wreaks havoc for a second day, with areas including Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City, Dundee and Angus, Edinburgh and Lothians, Fife, Findhorn Nairn Moray and Speyside and the Scottish Borders set to impacted by thedownpours.

Met Office yellow weather warning for rain remains in place for northern and eastern parts of the country until 6pm on Friday, November 3, with dangerous driving conditions, traffic delays and areas of flooding possible.

Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern said: “Hopefully the worst of it is now easing at it moves away. Ciaran is moving into the North Sea.

“It’s weakening. It is filling but it’s still bringing quite a blustery wind to many places.”

Unsettled conditions are set to continue this weekend. For those heading out for Bonfire Night on Sunday, a Met Office forecast states: “Mostly fine in the east to end the weekend and into next week although sunny spells and blustery showers further west”.

Areas across the west of Scotland are set to enjoy sunny spells on Sunday, with a bright day for the Lothians and southern areas of the country too.

Showers are expected to be light and scattered, with no heavy rain expected across Scotland on Sunday. Light showers are expected in the costal area of the grampians, as well as light winds for areas of Aberdeenshire.

Temperatures are expected to range from 2C to 11C – at around 5C to 7C during the hours of 7pm to 9pm when many will be heading out to enjoy Bonfire Night. It means, conditions for enjoying the fireworks are expected to be ideal.

If you are heading out on Saturday instead, the weather is expected to be a lot more settled that in recent days and weeks.

Meteorologist Ellie Glaisyer added: “That band of rain continues to push itself north and eastwards through Saturday afternoon. But the northern half of the UK seeing a much drier and brighter day. Plenty of sunny spells around.

“Still some scattered showers across the very northern parts of Scotland, but many places seeing a dry day and that band of rain continues to push its way eastwards through Saturday afternoon.

“Temperatures again on Saturday, similar to what we’ve seen in recent days, so 12 or 13 degrees across southern half of the UK but around eight to 10 degrees in the northern half.”
