Scotland’s Film and TV industry as grown considerably in the last 10 years, and continues to do so creating new and exciting opportunities for crew roles behind the scenes.
The growth of the sector is highlighted by the opening of new or expanded studio facilities, including BBC Studioworks at Kelvin Hall, Warpdpark Studios in Cumbernauld, home to Outlander, FirstStage Studios in Edinburgh, where Prime Video’s The Rig – which has returned to Scotland to film series 2 – and Anansi Boys were filmed, and the expansion of The Pyramids in West Lothian, home to another Prime Video HETV series, Good Omens 2.
Alongside these studios Scotland has seen a number of productions filming on location across Scotland including, Apple Original film Tetris, Annika, Channel 4 prison drama Screw, Irvine Welsh’s Crime starring Dougray Scott, Guilt 2 starring Mark Bonnar and Jamie Sives, Granite Harbour in Aberdeen, female detective drama Karen Pirie and ambulance call centre drama The Control Room.
BECTU Vision is a skills hub based in Glasgow which supports Scotland based film and TV crew in their careers and creates pathways for people looking to get their first opportunity in film & TV or transfer their skills from another industry.
BECTU Vision, in partnership with BBC Studio’s River City are now recruiting for a qualified electrician to work as an Electrician Conversion Trainee in the lighting department on the next series of River City.
No previous film experience is required and the successful applicant will work at River City’s Dumbarton Studio within an experienced lighting department learning about the equipment and techniques used on productions and on-set practice and spend time on a variety of other productions filming in Scotland and at Scotland’s largest lighting hire house, Panalux.
On Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at 6pm they will host an open evening at BBC Studioworks the purpose-built studio, set in the heart of Glasgow’s West End in the iconic Kelvin Hall.
This event is open to anyone interested in working in the lighting department of Film and TV productions, there will be a chance to find out more about this traineeship and other opportunities coming up for electricians in 2024, an opportunity to hear from previous trainees and industry professionals and have a tour of the studio itself.
