Education Scotland Announces Support for National Numeracy Day 2023

National Numeracy Day will take place on 17 May 2023 and Education Scotland has been announced as lead delivery partner once again.

Marked annually, National Numeracy Day has helped raise awareness around the importance of numbers in everyday life and has inspired people to take more than 650,000 actions to improve their numeracy since it launched in 2018.

The 2023 edition aims to empower individuals to improve their confidence and competency with numbers in three key areas of their lives; at home, at school and at work.

Interim Chief Executive of Education Scotland, Gillian Hamilton said: “We are delighted to be a Lead Delivery Partner of National Numeracy Day, a UK-wide observation to promote the importance of everyday maths, for a sixth consecutive year.

“In the lead up to 17 May, Education Scotland, alongside the charity National Numeracy, want to help children and adults feel confident about numbers at home, work and school.

“With the current cost of living crisis in mind, there will be a host of free online resources and videos showcasing numeracy in everyday life. From practical advice and tips, to celebrity tutorials to make your money go further, we hope they will encourage you to further improve your number confidence and skills.”

One of the most important steps in challenging the stigma around numbers is to talk about maths. This year you can join the Big Number Natter, a nationwide conversation about numbers. You could spark short, informal conversations during a tea break at work, or add the Big Number Natter as an agenda item to your meetings.

We hope to see lots of you join in on the day and feel free to share your experience on social media using the hashtags #BigNumberNatter and #NationalNumeracyDay.

This year, a host of free activities and events will also take place on National Numeracy Day Live with support from celebrity ambassadors including Katya Jones from Strictly Come Dancing, Peter Sawkins from the Great British Bake Off, and TV presenter Bobby Seagull.

There will be a 30 minute non-stop number fun session from 9.30am with special guest appearances from CBeebies Numberblocks and West Ham United Foundation.

e-Sgoil will also be hosting a number of DYW Live sessions on the day including discussions about maths in design, maths in healthcare and maths in farming. You can sign up for the sessions here.

From celebrity videos and worksheets for kids, to real life advice for adults, the National Numeracy Day website has everything your staff and networks need to join in on the fun.
