Scotland’s most stunning driving route named among most dangerous in the WORLD

The Bealach-na-ba offers stunning views across Wester Ross, the Isle of Skye and the Outer Hebrides – but it is not for the faint hearted

One of Scotland’s most famous and stunning driving routes has been named among the 10 most dangerous roads in the world. Despite its beauty, the Bealach-na-ba which forms part of the route from Lochcarron to Applecross in the Highlands can also present a challenge even to the most experienced driver.

Part of the North Coast 500, the 11-mile route offers unparalleled views across Wester Ross, the Isle of Skye and the Outer Hebrides. But according to car rental comparison website StressFreeCarRental.com, it is among the most perilous journeys anywhere on Earth.

The company describes Bealach-na-ba as a “so-called road”, adding: “This narrow and mountainous pass has a fearsome reputation due to its terrifying sharp hairpin terrifying twists and turns and steep gradients approaching 17 per cent.”

Also known as the ‘devil’s elbow’, the route also boasts the steepest ascent of any road in the UK at 2,054 feet. Even VisitScotland admits the road “isn’t for the faint hearted” but the beautiful views probably make it worth the attempt.

The road was constructed in 1822 as a drovers road and Bealach-na-ba translates as ‘Pass of the Cattle’. The route has not changed since then and it is said to resemble the mountain passes of the Alps.

It even has a sign at the start stating it is not suitable for learner drivers, large vehicles or caravans. Instead, an alternative route is advised through nearby Sheildaig and Kenmore.

But despite the hazardous nature of the road, it is a hit with visitors and has earned a five-star rating on Tripadvisor with over 1,000 reviews. One driver wrote: “Twisty roads, hairpin bends, windy streams, beautiful views and climbing through scenery: would highly recommend driving this road. Make sure you have a decent gear box!”

But another person who tackled it in a motorhome despite the warning said: “It is stunning BUT do not underestimate how difficult this is in a motor home. We were fortunate that we did not meet anyone coming down on the hairpins. The passing places are not generous. I would encourage folk to be more savvy than we were and understand how tricky this is”.

Bealach-na-ba was ranked ninth in the list of most dangerous roads across the world. The most terrifying was Skippers Canyon Road in New Zealand.
